UnMaxing your Lens (to make the layout CLEANER!)
A real-life lens, by it’s very nature, helps focus things. Like the lenses in a microscope, or your glasses, or telescope. A Squidoo lens is no different. Your lens is to focus in on things.
Bearing that in mind, you might want to consider unmaxing your lens.
What does unmaxing mean? It means unticking a little box hidden on the side of your lens to change the layout from a 3 column clutter to a 2 column cleaner design.
For any of my lenses where I hope to make affiliate sales, I unmax the lens. I don’t need my buyers looking at a cluttered design!
For my other information lenses I leave the 3 column lens displaying because of the revenue from the extra google ads on the right hand side. Sales will not be impacted because lots of my information lenses are not set up to make sales.
Once you know how to find the unmax button you will be able to play around with the look of your lens and get a feel for the different layouts. Not all lenses will suit 1 layout over the other.
So experiment!
So where do you find the tick box to unmax a lens? Here: www.squidoo.com/unmax

After ticking/unticking the “Max” button, you DON’T need to republish your lens - it’ll instantly change! Have a look at both views of your lens, and decide which looks best.
I’m going to unmax some of mine now - the layout has changed since last time I looked at unmaxxed lenes…

I know you don’t need to republish. I added that in because you might as well republish while you’re there.

One thing I want to know - what does unmaxing do to your SERP?
I’ve tried in on one lens and it seems to have maintained it’s strong position - anyone else have any different experiences?

Mr E, Unmaxing your lens gives the lens LESS outbound links I think, so it should improve your rank. Whether maxed or unmaxed, it is your content that is read first by google because of how the code is formatted. Even with 3 columns, the middle column is read first by google. So either way should be about the same.

Wish I had something to add. But I dont. Only to say.. thank you for sharing. I had no idea what unmaxing meant or did.

Secret_Article_Profits, one of my lenses which I will now unmax.

I love the idea of only maxing the lenses where you’re not looking to make affiliate sales! I has unmaxed all of mine because I really don’t like the cluttered look. But You’re right, on the leses that are mostly just informational, I might at well get more adSense revenue. Now I’ve got a combination of maxed and unmaxed lenses. Thanks for the tip, MrLewisSmile!
