The $7,500 lens

Posted on Jan 28 2009

Do you treat your lensmaking as a hobby or a business?

I would guess that more than 99.9% of lensmasters treat their lensmaking time as a hobby. It pays rather nicely if you hit upon a great niche idea and write up some great content, but most of the time people are making lenses it’s probably more fun than work.

If it felt like work they probably wouldn’t do it as much, in their free time no less!

For the casual Squidoo Lensmaster making lenses as a hobby, the hope of earning some extra pocket money and getting some friendly guestbook comments is enough of an extra incentive to keep them going.

But what would happen if you took a pen and paper and wrote down some goals for your Squidoo Income?

If you began to treat it more like a mission than a hobby then some really magical things would start to happen. You would be motivated to make more lenses and make more profits, write more useful information, learn more money-making ideas, and really start to devote enough time to your lensmaking to do some REAL damage.

Let’s say you set yourself a task of building 5 new lenses a week to earn an extra $500 a month from Squidoo.

You could start by:

Making a lens about anything you buy online
Making a lens about anything you search google for but find no useful results
Making a lens about different places to visit in your home town or country
Making a lens about each book you read
Making a lens about each film you see
Making a lens about different affiliate products which inspire you
Making a lens about a celebrity
Making a lens about a favourite charity
Making a lens about your friend’s business
Making a lens about a question that’s been bugging you
Making a lens about the best software to do XYZ
Making a lens about making lenses!
Making a lens about your favourite recipe
Making a lens about anything you think will sell!

And before you know it a year has gone by and your 5 lenses a week have turned into an impressive roster of 260 lenses.

Out of all those lenses you will have made some absolute winners, and also some absolute duds. But it’s the only way to learn what will and won’t succeed.

Also, it won’t take you long making lenses about things you know to realise that some topics are more profitable than others, and you will naturally be drawn to them.

I have a lens that I wrote one day just for fun that has earned me over $7500 in the past 2 years (from affiliate sales). And I only struck upon the topic by making a load of dud lenses first and just thinking it would be cool to make a lens about so-and-so.

When you start to focus on reaching income goals with your lenses you can start to see the whole process in a whole new light. That lens really opened my eyes to what is possible. That one lens has earned an average $300+ a month for the last 2 years.

Do you see yourself as a real Internet Niche Marketer and are you treating your online money-making as a real business? Or is making money on Squidoo just an extra-pocket-money hobby?

Lewis 🙂

P.S. don’t get me wrong. Both are fine. Hobby or business. But if you are looking for the big bucks online… treat it as a goal-worthy business. That’s the only way you will make it to 100, 200, or 500+ lenses.

Wow, congratulations! Squidoo has generated some great side income, but no single lens has produced that much for me.

  2. JaguarJulie says:

Lewis — you never cease to amaze me. Honestly! To think that you have earned some $7,500 or more in affiliate sales from one lens in some 2 years — that’s almost enough to pay for one year of college. Gosh, I just wish this writing platform had been available to me when I was in college. But, it still helps to pay for a tile job or perhaps a European vacation.

I like to write about my passions and love writing about my genealogical research — it’s been pretty cool to hook up with ‘relatives’ from the family tree.

  3. Pat says:

You are so inspiring. I have created lenses on a wide variety of topics and I am amazed at which of my lenses are the most successful.

  4. WApinoy says:

I am just starting to do it Lewis. Earning online income thru Squidoo is part of my goal. Thank you for you email.

Squidoo and other programs can be effective as you emphasize, If a person gets SERIOUS, Records their Objective and applies Massive Action.

Hi Lewis. Just stumbled across your blog. Very nice looking. My story is, I created a couple of lenses a good while back. Got some initial positive response and made a few affiliate sales from them, but basically I eventually forgot about them. Your words and enthusiasm make me want to re-visit Squidoo as a potential income generator. — Steve

  7. Just joined today and did not even know that one can earn money, even with nonprofit texts. So this presentation was very much welcomed. I shall proceed as I find the time (a major problem).

  10. Tommy says:

    Lewis,

I write a blog and several lenses on gardening. So far I haven’t reached even my first payout from Squidoo. In my online ventures, however, I have found the best advice is to never quit.

    Thanks for the inspiration.

  11. Jackie Lee says:

    Hey Lewis,
I have one of those lenses too, it was a whim that I wrote it up. I was excited about something I was using and wanted to share. It now does at least 300 in affiliate sales a month now too and has for the past couple years.

The problem I see with most people is this: they expect every lens they make to be a $7500 lens and when they aren’t or they haven’t hit that lens yet they decide squidoo just “doesn’t work” and give up on it.

I have made well over 100 lenses, and I have that one lens that makes that money. I have other lenses that make consistent income but I certainly have my fair share of duds too. If I had given up after 20 or 30 lenses I would never have hit the big one.

    Thanks for your insight.

    Jackie

  12. WOW… after reading your post, Lewis…I realize I’m really leaving money on the table by neglecting Squidoo… all because it’s such fun and I figured I was spending too much time there. LOL

    Thanks for the inspiration!

  14. Eurosquid says:

I think like everyone here, I would love to know which lens earned you $7500. Sounds like you hit gold. I have some great lenses, but none that came close to yours. Congratulations.

  15. Paula Atwell says:

This is an excellent post. I do not yet have the $7500 lens, but I have learned that what becomes popular is not what I expect to. Congrats on your successful lens. I have had others tell me that they have had lenses like this as well. The more you write, the more chances you have to find the $7500 lens.

  16. Katherine says:

Wow, what an inspiring post! Squidoo is one of my all time favorite ways to make money online. I think when people have fun putting the lenses together, it really shows.

  17. Adrian Lee says:

I make lenses for fun, when I feel like writing something and don’t feel like putting it in my blog. But I’ve got to say that I don’t earn any income from lenses. Maybe I just don’t know how to do it right, or I keep writing about the wrong things!

But it is fun, and I intend to just keep going. Maybe one day…

  18. June says:

    I am so impressed!!

but what I want to know is….

What is the secret to keeping up with 260 lens? I have trouble with keeping up wit just 40 and my Big Island of Hawaii lens has gotten so large that it has a hard time loading.

Do you delete lens that aren’t doing well and start new ones or what?

  19. Dawn E. Worswick says:

I have just started but to make goals right away and stick to them is a great way to start. I am a writer and I own a business. I love to share and this is an exciting platform to share upon. Thanks for your help, I’ll see you at the top!

  20. Theresa says:

Hi, I’ve been reading your squidoo cool and I think I’m retainiing some but I have yet to write anything people want to read. But thank you, Theresa

  21. ron says:

Great info, it really helped me.

  22. Shalisha says:

All I can say is, you rock. I love the way you give tips to help transform people from being mere squidoo hobbyists, to turning it into a real business. That’s my mission. I’m following you.

  23. Kurt Evans says:

I treat lensmaking as a job. I’ve found it easier to make lenses that I feel passionate about and that I can make some kind of internal connection to.

  24. Chad says:

Wow, I have just started building lenses and have about 5. I hope to find that money maker so I guess I better get back to work..

  25. Wow! I use affiliates, but haven’t made anything yet. What am I doing wrong??? I desperately need to make some money, as I have no other income.

  26. Lewis,

Wouldn’t it be better to write one lens per week and four other articles on other sites to link to lenses? So you end up with 52 lenses and 208 backlinks? If you just write 260 articles without any efforts on promotion wouldn’t it be tough to make cash?

I hear there used to be a list of the 100 most profitable lenses. Is that data available anywhere?

    Your blog design rocks.

  27. I have yet to make any affiliate money at all. How’s it done? i have over 175 lenses!

  28. I’ve read that 80 – 90% of success is just showing up and keep on doing.

  29. Brett Jarvi says:

    bullshit

    • MrLewisSmile says:

Actually, Brett, since this post was published the amount has continued to rise. And there are many people making lenses that earn them a lot more.

  30. Masz says:

I’m really glad that I found this blog. Really gives me a lot great information. Just a moment ago, I’m stuck of what to write for my squidoo, now I have a few ideas. Thank you for sharing this.

  31. I never knew I could make money from squidoo. However, It has earned me a few bucks that I am happy with.

Im even sitting on first page for my choice keyword phrase. Thanks Squidoo…Your’re GREAT!!

  32. This blog post is truely inspiring for me. I treat my lens writing as a business. But, I have to admit it is the most fun I have ever had doing a business! 🙂

  33. Prasad N says:

    • MrLewisSmile says:

Keep going with it! It really starts to pay off when you make enough duds to come up with the gold 😉

  34. ZeeMer says:

Hi Lewis, I can’t stop reading your lenses. I take down notes everytime I do. I didn’t know you can make blogging a lucrative business. I’ve just started and I want to make money out of my love for writing. Thanks.

  35. klaird says:

I had a lot of duds before I starting making any money. The biggest reason was I didn’t take the time to read all the free advice and tips that people write on blogs and on Squidoo about how to make money on Squidoo. After reading a lot of advice from a lot of experienced lensmasters I started making new lenses, implementing the new knowledge, and I starting making money right away after that. I hope to have one as successful as you! Great job.

  36. Marc Guberti says:

Wow, that is a good plan. I actually follow the 5 lenses or more a week plan as well and even wrote a lens about it. Thank you for the great advice.

  37. MillBucks says:

Now that’s what I call impressive! I have only been a member of Squidoo for 5 months and I learn things everyday, I guess I am doing something right since I have received 2 paydays so far.

Although it hasn’t been much its enough to keep me motivated in building more lenses and hopefully reach a peak such as yourself.

    Congrats on your remarkable achievement.

  38. $7500 is really insane just through Squidoo. Wow..!! I am joining Squidoo today.
