Module Makeover: The New, The Bad, And The Good

Posted on Nov 29 2007

New Squidoo ModulesSquidoo has had a module makeover! Some for good, some modules have vanished, and some new modules.

Vanished Modules?! Well, kind of. You can only find the Featured Lens module at the moment by typing it into the search box on the A-Z tab. It’s not listed under F. Hopefully this will change. I use that module on 75% of my lenses. Also, the SquidooCool module can now only be found by searching for that too. So hopefully that will be fixed :)

The poll module is now in the ‘basic’ list, which is very good indeed, and there is a whole new category. Widgets. You get to play around with ‘random fact’, ‘Homer Simpson quotes’ and ‘Love Horoscope’ modules, to pick just a few at random.

Also, a new Weather module is there along with a new Yelp module. Weather is as you would expect, but what’s yelp?

Loyalis has the low-down at his blog. Basically it fills your module with reviews of local business, set by the zip code you put in. Loyalis writes that the module is one that Google can read properly (unlike the RSS module), so the new Yelp module provides extra content for your lens to help in the search engines.

So go to the Add Modules screen of your favourite lens and see if there is anything new you like :)

  1. Disappearing modules– I noticed that! I was upset when I couldn’t find the Featured Lenses module at first, since I’m getting in the habit of adding one to most of my lenses. I hope they make it more accessible again.

The problem with Yelp is that some of the reviews are pretty remote from the zip codes I put in, even in heavily populated areas where there should be lots of content available.

I wouldn't survive without this tool! I use this every day. It's one of the most useful things I have in my toolbox.

You type in your words, change the settings and colors to make it match your site, and voila. You have yourself a professional logo. Instantly.

See the SquidooCool logo at the top of this site? It took me about 60 seconds to build ;-)
