Using Squidoo for Marketing Purposes, or , Some Basic Squidoo Advice

Posted on Mar 28 2010

To Internet Marketers, Squidoo is a way to get high rankings in Google.

Squidoo has a high page rank, and many backlinks pointing to it, and building pages is a super easy process.

If you want to venture into a new niche as an experiment, Squidoo is the way to go. See how easy it is to compete on page 1 of Google for your chosen keywords. You don’t need to buy a domain name either. It’s a good way to add to your marketing efforts and quickly test a new niche.

To make the most of Squidoo you simply need to tip the scales in your favour, just a little bit.

Make sure your lenses tick all of the following boxes:

* Compelling title that makes people want to know more
* Relevant tags, in your sidebar and the edit screen
* Images alongside any chunk of text
* Interactive elements, like a poll or guestbook. The more they interact with your lens the more likely they are to click your links
* Add your links to the introduction text. They get high click through rates.
* Use the Featured Lenses module to link to related lenses (also use the new sidebar widgets to do this too)

If you want to know more about making successful lenses are getting visitors can earn you money, take a look through the History of this blog using the archive feature or SiteMap.

As a fellow squidoo’er the best piece of advice that I can offer is this…Move to wherever Seth Godwin lives and have an affair with him, failing that I have no idea what advice I could give any other squid as I have been a member for almost a year, made 43 lenses, follow the rules you stipulate will get us top rankings on Google and…yep, I get hardly any readers let alone reach the top 100 oh well, que sara eh !

I keep working at it. Thanks as always for the great advice. I am a wee bit confused though about the new side bar widgets. Are they only for Giant Squids?

    • MrLewisSmile says:

      Not for Giants only!

Everyone has them now I believe. The Featured Lens sidebar widget has really increased my cross-lens-visitors.

      • June says:

Thanks Lewis. Now I have to get serious and figure this out. The last time I looked in the “Widget” feature I didn’t find it which is why I thought it was only for Giant Squids.

    • Zcademy says:

June, you have to reach a certain level, 20 I think, in the Monster Points game before you unlock the sidebar widgets.

    Higain,
Have just finished my first lens where I’m actually trying to sell something on…maybe thats where been going wrong before huh?

Also it’s my first lens where I have been absolutely sure of what I was doing too hehe,
thanks to reading parts of this blog now know just what tags are and how best to use them within a lens.
    Thanks Lewis šŸ™‚

Keep it up, Tina! It was a while after my first lens that I started building lenses to sell various things. I made a lens about remembering your dreams, selling the dream diary, CDs, dictaphone, etc. It was really fun to make, because it was a good mix of modules.

Can Squidoo modify content or Auto-truncate entries in uwers lenses without user knowledge ?

  5. Jackie Lee says:

Do a little keyword research first. That’s the biggest tip I’d give. Make sure you are actually targeting words people are using to search for your topic and the competition for those words/phrases is at a level you can beat.

    • MrLewisSmile says:

It’s SO easy to be swept along by the work of it all… and forget to do any keyword research for what you’re going for until after you’ve begun.

I need someone to sit by my side and remind me of all the things I forget throughout my day!

  6. Katherine says:

Don’t every give up on a lens unless you’re bored with it! I had a lens that did poorly for a good year until it started to get search engine traffic. I liked the topic so I stuck with it. šŸ™‚ If the lens isn’t interesting enough to fight for, I just delete it.

    • MrLewisSmile says:

I’ve started so many lenses that I got bored with… they’re just sitting in my account half done, waiting for who knows what!

  7. Alexkazam says:

Keep making lenses- and look at Lewis Smile’s lenses and blogs as well as other top lensmakers because they are very knowledgeable and are successful with Squidoo.

Also- look at the worst lenses- and DON’T do what they are doing!

  8. The toughest thing for me is the use of tags. How many is appropriate?

    • MrLewisSmile says:

A lens has a maximum of 40, but I don’t go that high anymore. I tend to put about 15 tags in, but it depends on the lens. Don’t put tags in for the sake of it – just keep them targeted to the content. You can see more about tagging at http://www.squidoo.com/tagging-tricks

      – Lewis

  9. My best peace of Squidoo advice is: you should learn how to create good lenses that will get traffic before doing anything else. Iā€™m studying and learning now, after making 4 lenses. I saw that attracting visitors to your lenses is not a simple matter; and traffic is basic if you want to be noticed online.

Being a newby i’m stuck already! I have had a website that was designed by someone else before so didn’t need to know the technical stuff but when trying to sign up here how important is the name of the URL, i have ideas for lots of different lenses, different subjects etc, as we can’t change the URL once in place how does it effect placings on Google etc (or is it only tags, backlinks etc that matter for placings. Apologises if this sounds thick! but got too ask!

  11. Chris says:

I started using Squidooo as a place to create links to my blog but I am now addicted to trying to make money on the site and become the #1 soccer squid.

  12. Squidoo has been kind to me. I’ve had a few lenses for about 2 years and they have put my counseling and coaching practice at the top of local Google searches in my specialties.

And you’re right: they are easy and fun to build.

  13. larry says:

I did not see Jacki’s comment>> I have been on Squidoo for a few years now and I have a different kind of working hours for summer. I don’t get back soon enough I think to keep my lens updated. I use to us photobucket for all of my photos, I see now you can only us 9 at a time, now I have to figure out how to u another one, I am not a computer Geek!!! Not complaining I guess I just have to put more hours in on the computer.. I am getting good reviews on my older lens, and I think I have the keyword problem figured out, but…. I really do like all of your lens, seems like I keep falling into them, but they are all very informative.. I am still having problems getting a clickable link on my text, could you explain?? Thanks for your great lenses….

  14. Michael says:

Where do I find the Introduction text. Where is it located so I can add some links as per your advice- thanks

  15. petualangweb says:

thanks for the tips I try to join the squidoo, and I want to learn with the experts

  16. GrammaLinda says:
