Backlinks – Your Google Ranking JetPack

Posted on Dec 30 2008

What will get your higher up in the search results?

A backlink is when another webpage or blog or lens links to your lens. They ‘link back’ to you, as if they are voting for you by linking to you. They trust you, and are willing to link to you.

A backlink is also known as an Inbound link, or an Incoming link.

When Google determines how high in the results to put your lens they look at how many backlinks it has, as it helps determine what is worth looking at.

In an ideal world every lens and blog post you write would be so utterly fantastic and groundbreaking that hundreds of people would be compelled to link to you. But this isn’t the case, because in an effort to compete in different niches you will target the keywords people are searching for.

So you will need to be proactive and generate as many backlinks as you can yourself.  As the old saying suggests: “If you want anything done, do it yourself” 🙂

Over the next few weeks I will be posting some great ways to build your backlinks. I will review some sites, recommend actions for you to take, and we’ll work on getting ranked higher in Google.

The one thing every lens will benefit from is more traffic. It’s funny – where else but in Internet Marketing is ‘TRAFFIC’ a good thing?!

Lewis 🙂

  1. Great article. I have been focusing on backlinks. I found “link referral” which is a site that allows you to receive reviews of your site if you inturn review others. While doing so, you not only get reviews, you can be favoried as well as followed. This has help my traffic flow. Every little bit helps. Also, I like reviewing other sites, gives me insight in how to present a better “page” (content, etc.).

Thanks again, Lewis, for your article.

  2. I am looking forward to your blog posts. I need to learn about it for sure. Thanks in advance!

Hi lewis – another great post. The whole issue about back links and inbound links is one that needs careful thought. Have you come across any evidence to suggest that google or any other search engine looks at the context of the linking site as part of the value assessment as i have a feeling that links from directory sites just don’t cut it and may be worse than useless. I always try to get links with sites that compliment what we are doing and shy away from these commercial directory sites. What do you think. By the way thinking of using youtube as a way of getting audio into lenses – any thoughts.

Great article about the value of backlinks and explaining them. I talk about backlinks on my lens. Alot of people do not understand the importance and you definitely explained it well. Remember the higher the site you are placing your link on the better the backlink is for your ranking. I hope this makes sense.

  6. We are looking forward to your future articles about backlinks. Let’s start the new year off with some great info!
